Michif is the language of the Red River Métis people. It's also the word some Métis people use to self-identify in replace of Métis because the name Métis was given to us by the French, and it means "Mixed". A common misconception is if a human has First Nations and European ancestors, especially French, then you are Métis. This is not true. To be Métis you must first self identify as Métis, be accepted into a Métis community that can trace  your ancestor to a traditional Métis settlement such as the famous Red River.
