Description
The Buffalo represents respect for ourselves and all living beings. As the great herds roamed Turtle Island, the Buffalo gave its life and every part of its being to the people.
No animal was more important to the existence of Indigenous people in North America than the Buffalo. It provided food, shelter, tools, clothing, and essential items for human life; little to nothing was wasted. Indigenous people considered themselves caretakers of the Buffalo herd, never taking more than they needed.
This reciprocal relationship was a true expression of respect.
